Gum Disease: Signs and Symptoms

Gum disease is typically painless, but it can damage your mouth greatly if it is not taken care of. Gum disease is also called periodontal disease. It is caused by plaque buildup on your teeth; plaque is a sticky film of bacteria which constantly forms on our teeth and gum tissue.

There are many signs that could point to gum disease. Some of these are:

–easily bleeding gums
–swollen, tender, red gums
–gums have pulled away from teeth
–a change in your bite pattern
–a change to the fit of dentures
–persistent bad breath
–loose or separating permanent teeth

The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is certainly treatable, and can usually be effectively reversed through a professional cleaning at Sean P Avera DDS Inc., followed with excellent oral hygiene (twice daily brushing and daily flossing).

The sooner gum disease is noticed, the sooner it can be treated. Advanced gum disease, also called periodontitis, can lead to bone and tissue loss in your mouth, and is much more difficult to treat than the earlier stages. Schedule an appointment with your dentistimmediately if you suspect gum disease at any stage.
