Scaling and Planing Teeth

One of the most important procedures you’ll have done here at Sean P Avera DDS Inc. in Auburn, California is getting your teeth scaled and planed. If you haven’t heard of these terms before, don’t worry – you’re not the only one. Scaling and planing are technical terms we use to refer to removing excess plaque from your teeth, and along your gums.

But a lot of people don’t understand why there’s a need to have their teeth scaled and planed, or more importantly, how it helps improve your oral health. Dr. Sean P Avera has spent years treating patients and has seen scaling and planing produce great results. That’s why he has instructed the staff at Sean P Avera DDS Inc. in Auburn, California to scale and plane your teeth.

But what does that involve? Let’s take a look.

What is it?
Scaling and planing is the process of removing hardened plaque – called tartar – from your teeth, and around your gum line. When plaque has the chance to build up on your teeth, it becomes too hard to remove yourself. In addition, that hardened plaque is a haven for bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease.

Why do I need it?
You’ll need scaling and planing if you have any tartar on your teeth, or near your gums. You can’t let that much bacteria sit in your mouth for too long without running the risk of infection or cavities.

It’s also too difficult to remove at home without risking damage to your teeth and gums. Our trained staff knows how to safely plane and scale your teeth, and they’ll let you know during your appointment if it’s something you need.
